India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 4 Live Streaming
Watch India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 4 live streaming, 2009 live streaming."Day 3 belongs to NZ" read a felt-penned placard on the grassy embankment at McLean Park. Around those four words were 11 pink hearts, neatly and accurately cut out by some loving fan, with each of the New Zealand players' names loosely scribbled in the middle. It aptly summarised the third day's play for the home side - a wee bit ragged, a lot tidier, and full of spirit.
For the third day running, on a flat track, New Zealand stuck to their task and stayed in control of this Test. Threatening partnerships were broken shortly before the lunch and tea intervals, and they came out to polish off the rest of the Indian batting order in the final session. India's shot selection was questionable but there was no taking away from a dominant New Zealand, who rarely wavered in their lines and produced a sustained fightback. India failed to score even half of New Zealand's total. They lost their last four wickets for 35 runs after tea and a chuffed Daniel Vettori had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on.
To cap off an excellent day, New Zealand got rid of Virender Sehwag cheaply once again, though it owed more to bad batting than good bowling. Sehwag played another ugly heave across the line to Jeetan Patel and was hit on the back leg, in front of off stump. And for the second time in the day Rahul Dravid found himself batting for survival.
Laxman clanged Iain O'Brien for consecutive boundaries but soon steered an outswinger from Martin to the waiting slip cordon. Harbhajan Singh came in and threw his bat around for 18 from 11 balls, including one rollicking six off O'Brien over midwicket, but the bowler had the last laugh when Harbhajan eventually picked out deep square leg. A snorter of a catch by Ryder at gully accounted Zaheer Khan next ball and the Indian innings ended on 305. India had resisted, in bursts, but New Zealand fought back harder with a flurry of wickets.
Until Dravid's error, he and Laxman - the second most successful fifth-wicket pair in Test cricket - looked inseparable. After Sachin Tendulkar fell for 49, Dravid was joined by Laxman and they meshed impeccable technique with delicate drives that drew warm applause from a sparse crowd.
Two beautifully timed boundaries off Patel with trademark authority early on set the tone for a Laxman innings, highlighted by dainty footwork, crisp use of the wrists, and elegant shot selection. Laxman stayed true to his graceful nature as his innings progressed. He handled Vettori and Patel almost effortlessly and even their good deliveries were occasionally driven through cover with disregard. Post lunch, he caressed boundaries either side of the pitch and even afforded himself an aerial shot - not a heave, but a cocked-wrist flick - over midwicket off Patel. These shots took him through the twenties, so often a bogey phase for Laxman, and his half-century was not far away.

Watch India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 2 live streaming, 2009 live streaming.Taylor's power, his hitting technique, Greatbatch reckons, could have come from Kilikiti, the Samoan version of cricket. Kilikiti is played with a heavy rubber ball and a long three-sided bat, which makes it difficult to predict the direction of the hits. Taylor's mother was from Samoa.
There wasn't much cricket in Wairarapa though, and Taylor had to be taken away to Palmerston North where he studied in boarding school, whose headmaster had been there from Greatbatch's time. But his parents were not really well to do. "We had to find money for him to board at the school," Greatbatch says. "Money for his lodging and stuff. He had the money to go to school, but other things cost money. Myself, CD and some people around here used to do raffles for him."
Ryder, too, was spotted early by Greatbatch, during a club match. "I watched him get 260-odd when he was playing second-grade club cricket," Greatbatch says. "He was a boy playing like a man. Very skilful, but quite wild, and it is great to see him play at the highest level. This kid can be world class. You can see how at ease he is. He belongs there."
Ryder though, didn't have parents who were as supportive as Taylor's, who took five minutes to decide in favour of Ross going to a good school and playing cricket. The Ryder family was a troubled unit, and Jesse had to be on his own all the way. He studied in Napier Boys High School, which is not too far from McLean Park.
Greatbatch's association with Ryder wasn't a long one, but he thought it was perhaps best for Ryder to move on. "His talent is quite good but there were other things too," says Greatbatch. "So I told him he needed to go to some other place to sort things out. I didn't sack him but he made the decision. That was the best things that could have done. He went to live in Wellington, and played for them."
After just six matches together at the first-class level, Ryder moved to Wellington. But they would soon be reunited at Test level. Greatbatch had foreseen that long ago. Perhaps he had seen that during one of their big partnerships at Nelson Park.
"It is a lovely feeling to watch them play together," Greatbatch said. "When I first saw them, I thought that they will both play for New Zealand. They were pretty talented though that doesn't always get you there. You know - in different ways - they have got there."

Watch India vs New Zealand 2nd Test live streaming, 2009 live streaming. The gulf was wide in the first Test, but New Zealand have been putting in the hard yards over the last four days to give themselves the best chance of bridging the gap. What they'll hope for now is to get some early momentum at McLean Park, take the honours in the first two sessions, and hope India feel the pressure. Some quick Indian wickets with the new ball could still swing things their way, but if India survive the early exchanges, it could be another long Test for New Zealand.
Jeetan Patel is likely to come in for the disappointing Kyle Mills, who did his cause no favours with a lacklustre performance in Hamilton - 1 for 119 in 24.2 overs. Moreover, in two previous Tests in Napier, Mills' stats are equally mediocre - none for 128 in 44 overs. New Zealand also need to decide if Daniel Flynn has recovered from the bruising he suffered on his hand in the first Test. He practised despite a swollen hand on the eve of the Test, and a final call will only be taken after a comprehensive fitness Test on Thursday morning. If he fails to make the grade, Jamie How will take his place.
New Zealand (likely): 1 Tim McIntosh, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Daniell Flynn/Jamie How, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Jesse Ryder, 6 James Franklin, 7 Brendon McCullum (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Jeetan Patel, 10 Iain O'Brien, 11 Chris Martin.
India will almost certainly play the team that won so convincingly in Hamilton. There were question-marks over the third seamer before that game, but Munaf Patel dispelled them emphatically with match figures of 5 for 120.
India (likely): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Munaf Patel.

Watch India vs New Zealand 1st Test Day 2 live streaming, 2009 live streaming.Today, in scoring his third century, and the first as captain, he showed qualities that a top-order batsman would have been proud of. Soft hands were the first of them. Even when the fast bowlers induced edges, they fell short of the slips, much to the frustration of the bowler and fielders. That is where Vettori was different from the McIntoshes and the Guptills. Slowly he came to terms with the pitch, and started working his wrists around.
Vettori has the ability to shape up for a drive, and then use his wrists to direct the ball square on the off side, straight down the pitch, or into the on side. Three boundaries in three overs in the middle of the innings highlighted that ability. First, Munaf was driven wide of mid-on; in the next over he drove straight and again beat the same fielder. Then, he reached out for a drive against Harbhajan Singh, found the delivery too wide, and rolled the wrists on it, keeping the ball along the ground and beating the point fielder.
By the time Vettori had got out, he had scored a century that only vindicates his batting potential. But there was unfinished business for Ryder. A superb season so far needed a defining milestone, one that would confirm his coming of age. Ryder's century didn't come without drama. From 77 to 98 he moved in Iain O'Brien's company, and scored the next four in the unreliable company of Chris Martin.
He reached the century with a short-arm pull, with a spread-out field, showing how strong those wrists and forearms are. Today, along with Vettori, they carried New Zealand and kept them in the match.

Watch India vs New Zealand 1st Test live streaming, 2009 live streaming. The New Zealand board has declined an Indian broadcaster's request to start the Test in Hamilton at noon instead of the traditional 11am after discussions with the teams and match officials. Multi Screen Media Pvt Ltd (formerly Sony Entertainment Television) had approached New Zealand Cricket with the request as it wants to maximise its viewership in India. If the start had been pushed back, the Test would have begun at 4.30 am in India, as opposed to 3.30 am.
The starting times for the second and third Tests, to be played in Napier and Wellington, haven't been finalised yet.
While over the past two days in Hamilton, light has held well until 7 pm, which would have been the new scheduled close, the second and third days of the Test were expected to be cloudy. If any time had been lost to rain, it would have been difficult to make up for it in the evenings. Moreover, there was the small matter of the bowlers' wanting to use the early-morning freshness and moisture.
The idea of a later start didn't seem to sit well with the players. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's captain, said it would be a strange experience if the match were to start at noon. "It will be very different for us," Dhoni said. "Playing at night it seems like. Will go on till don't know what time. That will be definitely difficult. I have not played any Test that starts at 12. Definitely a bit of concern."
The other Tests in the New Zealand season, the ones against West Indies which were played in December (the middle of summer), had noon starts. And since the timings for the next two Tests have not been finalised, delayed starts remain a possibility.

India's 48-day tour of New Zealand doesn't include a tour game, and the schedule was criticised by former players.
"For me, it is a bit of a myth about having to go and have a warm-up game," Kirsten said. "It can work and it can't work. I, as an individual, couldn't stand warm-up games because the tour became that much longer."
India have been slow starters on tours, often turning out cold on the first day. But Sehwag said that there was no point wasting the good form on tour games. He has found a friend in his coach.
"I just believed that if I could get enough preparation, I was experienced enough in my own thinking to go straight into Test cricket after a few nets," Kirsten said. "But the general rule is that you have got to have a warm-up game. We have come on this tour, and we didn't have any warm-up games. Yes, one could argue that we were a bit under-cooked in the Twenty20 games.

The bowling attack - apart from Vettori - has been a shambles so far, and the short boundaries in Hamilton won't ease their task. What will encourage the home team is the courage they showed when up against a daunting target in Christchurch, where they scored 334 and clearly rattled the Indians despite a middle-order collapse.
India have already ensured they'll get at least a share of the series, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni will want more than that: a win in either of the next two games will give India their first ODI series win in New Zealand. Tendulkar is absent, but the manner in which the entire batting line-up has fired suggests they'll still feel confident of sealing the series in Hamilton.
India, on the other hand, have struggled with the solitary win - against Zimbabwe in the 1992 World Cup - in five games.
The team batting first hasn't yet won a day-night game at this venue, losing all three. In the last two ODIs under lights, New Zealand chased down 347 against Australia, and scored 165 in 18.1 overs in a ten-wicket win against England.
The last time Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder opened the batting at this ground, they clobbered 165 at more than nine an over, which is a record opening partnership at Seddon Park.
India have never won an ODI series in New Zealand. The best they've managed are draws in 1993-94 and 1998-99.

Watch India vs New Zealand 3rd ODI live streaming, 2009 live streaming. Both India and New Zealand have entertainers in their batting line-ups but the rainy weather in Napier and Wellington ensured that their performances were curtailed. The first ODI was a one-sided 28-over game, which India won by 53 runs, and the second got no further than 28.4 overs. Sunday's forecast says there's a 20% chance of precipitation in Christchurch. Hopefully it will leave enough time to squeeze in a 50-over contest.
India opened their tour with a Twenty20 international at the AMI Stadium, and their batsmen perished as they tried to take advantage of the short square boundaries. However, their approach in the one-day games has been more methodical and it is their intent which will worry New Zealand. Before the second ODI was ruined by rain, Sachin Tendulkar merely rotated strike while Virender Sehwag attacked viciously. However, Tendulkar seamlessly shifted to a higher gear and bore the responsibility of scoring quickly after Sehwag's dismissal. India have also kept New Zealand guessing about the No. 3 position: they sent in Gautam Gambhir in Wellington after Mahendra Singh Dhoni had been promoted in Napier.
New Zealand's best bowler has been their captain Daniel Vettori but he's had to perform damage control because the fast bowlers have bowled without consistency and conceded too many. Ian Butler was the best of the fast bowlers in Wellington, bowling short of a length on middle and off stump. Kyle Mills, however, was yet to find his direction while Jacob Oram was steady. Their bowling unit needs to perform collectively to restrict a powerful Indian line-up. The plan is to adopt a fuller line but whether it will work remains to be seen.
A total of 24 sixes were hit in the first Twenty20 international at the AMI Stadium. There may not be as many on Sunday but if the weather stays clear the runs should flow because of the small boundaries. The trick, however, will be trying to steal ones, twos and threes on a small field. The weather on the eve of the match was warm and sunny but there is a 20% chance of rain on Sunday.
New Zealand have played 43 ODIs in Christchurch, winning 25 and losing 18. Since 2000, they've won 12 and lost three.
India have a poor record at the venue, losing all their five games here. New Zealand average 30.40 runs per wicket at the AMI Stadium, while India average 19.19.
"You have to hang in there for a while, not just go out and play your shots. You have to select your bowler, read the circumstances, your areas, sort out your game plan and what you are doing on the field. It is really important to do proper preparation before the game."
Suresh Raina knows what it takes.
"After the rained-out game we've got to win, Dan's told us it's a must-win game. We've been in the situation before with West Indies, and we've come out winning the must-win games, so hopefully the pressure we can put ourselves under will work in our favour."
Ross Taylor is confident New Zealand can bounce back.

The short-pitched bowling has backfired on New Zealand: Sehwag has scored 109 of his 131 runs in the two ODIs square of the wicket, cover and midwicket - 63 of them on the leg side.
"We have to pitch it up a little bit more," Ross Taylor said. "We've been punished square, and the New Zealand grounds are very short square, so we have to get them to hit down the ground more. If we bowl a heavy ball and force them to hit down the ground more, it'll give us a chance and help us set fields as well."
The bowlers seem to be bowling to a plan, the fields are in place, but something goes wrong against Sehwag. "That's what destructive batsmen do," Daniel Vettori said after the second ODI. "They put people off their game plans. I wouldn't say intimidated, but you are fearful of what's going to come next. You are never sure what he is going to do, he is that good a player that he can hit all around the park."
One over from the second ODI summed up the bowlers' helplessness. After Sehwag had top-edged Kyle Mills just over the fielder on the long-leg boundary, he was tested with more short stuff. He fetched two deliveries from outside off and pulled them. The next was bowled short outside off stump with a strong off-side field. Sehwag cleared his front foot a bit to make room and cut it, generating power with his wrists to find the gap between two fielders stationed close to each other. Even the man at sweeper-cover didn't move. Such shots shred game plans, psyches and sprits.
New Zealand are almost desperate to win the toss and bat in order to avoid the pressure Sehwag puts them under right away. It is Sehwag's unpredictability and unconventional batting that they fear most. Vettori made an interesting comparison between tackling Sehwag and Chris Gayle. "I suppose with Gayle we have got a feel of where he is going to hit and have more opportunities to block him out," Vettori said. "With Sehwag, he has got so many quality players around him, so that gives him a sort of licence. It's not in just one area we can block with Sehwag, we have seen him hit in a lot of areas. He is a great player, and with great players the best-laid plans can go awry.
"I suppose the guys run in and maybe second-guess what's going to happen. We have got to tell ourselves that we have got to bowl in our area, and if we get hit from there we can live with that."
To spice things up the third ODI will be played at the AMI Stadium with its odd shape and extremely short square boundaries. Sehwag's fitness wasn't a source of concern for India on the eve of the match - Mahendra Singh Dhoni played it down - and in all likelihood he will be there to impose himself on the game again. New Zealand will just have to find a way past him.

Watch India vs New Zealand 2nd ODI live streaming, 2009 live streaming. The tour has followed a trend till now. In all three games, India have batted first. In all three matches, they have made quick starts. The rest of the game has been decided by how well the New Zealand fast bowlers have come back. In the Twenty20s, they managed to get quick wickets, followed by smart stifling jobs by Daniel Vettori. And though they failed in the first ODI, Vettori is not looking at a change of personnel or plans.
"We are tying to find the balance between being tough on them [the bowlers] and also realising that they have done a pretty good job for a while now," Vettori said. "I think they understand where they went wrong and how to rectify that. We are hoping that Napier is a bit of an aberration in terms of our bowling performance, but we need some guys to step up and replicate the form they have shown previous to that game.
"If you look at the guys who played in the last game, Ian Butler bowled really well, Kyle Mills has been our best bowler for a long time and Iain O'Brien has been pretty impressive in his start to international cricket. We will have a hard look at Tim [Southee] coming back into the side, but I would probably err on the side of backing these guys to get the job done this time around."
"In a five-match series, you need to be at least 1-1 at this point. So we realise how important it is. I suppose we do have a little bit of reputation coming into Wellington for these sorts of games and playing reasonably well. So we are confident that we can bounce back pretty quickly. The position we put ourselves against England when we lost the T20s pretty comprehensively and came back here and played well. It's a ground we enjoy playing at and hopefully all those things move towards a win for us."
Vettori was hopeful ahead of the second ODI
"If we don't lose wickets early,we can easily score 300 in every game [of this series]. New ball is important for us. In the last game we scored 273 off 38 overs, we could have gone on to 350-360 if it had been a 50-over game. Our batting is our strength, and if we can play the new ball well we invariably manage 280-290 at least.
Sehwag echoes a confident India

The hosts have to do all the running now. The pitch looks slow and is not expected to assist seam movement. Virender Sehwag has already said that if India's batting clicks, they can score 300 in every game. Even so, New Zealand couldn't have chosen a better venue to level the series. It's their favourite venue and Daniel Vettori said his players feel very comfortable playing here.
However, they have a key injury worry ahead of the game. Brendon McCullum has a thumb injury and Peter McGlashan has been called up to the squad in case McCullum doesn't recover in time. If McCullum doesn't play then Martin Guptill will open. Without McCullum, New Zealand might struggle to get someone to guide the inexperienced batting line-up.
India will again be without the injured Ishant Sharma. But it is their batting that hurt New Zealand in the first game. As they did in Sri Lanka, India have continued to shuffle the batting order. Dhoni came in at No 3 in the last game and if you believe Sehwag, New Zealand were caught unawares wondering if Dhoni had come to pinch hit or bat as a regular No. 3. The Indians are incredibly confident but occasionally, as happened during the Twenty20, they become complacent. The twin losses may actually have done India a lot of good.

New Zealand have won 18 won ODIs, lost nine and tied two matches in Napier. However, their win-loss record at the venue since 2005 is 3-3. India have only won one out of four at this ground.India have a poor record in New Zealand, winning only nine matches out of 30. Against New Zealand they've won seven and lost 16, including six of the last eight. Among countries where they've played at least five games, only in the West Indies do they have a poorer win-loss ratio.
Tendulkar has 16,440 ODI runs, 6765 more than New Zealand's 12 players together.
Taylor averages 136.50 in Napier, where he's scored 273 runs in five innings at a strike-rate of 95
Mahendra Singh Dhoni was confident his young outfit would learn from the mistakes that cost them the first Twenty20 international in Wellington. However, they didn't learn quickly enough, and the upshot was a 2-0 defeat for the world champions. Now they are faced with the challenge of adapting to the 50-over format in conditions their batsmen haven't fully come to grips with yet and to counter a tenacious opponent expert in exploiting home advantage. From India's point of view it's vital they hit the ground running at McLean Park.
India's opening combination of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag has played a pivotal role in their one-day success in 2008 but Gambhir has struggled in New Zealand. He was over-aggressive in the first Twenty20 international and failed to find his rhythm despite spending time at the crease in the second. The openers' failure to provide substantial starts has deprived the middle-order of the momentum they have become accustomed to. However, that partnership will be split in Napier when Sachin Tendulkar returns to open with Sehwag, Gambir dropping down the order. Tendulkar's return, though, means India will have one opener who is playing his first game of the tour, and a No. 3 yet to find form.
New Zealand are quietly confident after their upset win in the Twenty20s. Their fast bowlers provided early breakthroughs and the pressure was increased by Daniel Vettori, who was able to restrict a strong middle-order. They have also been bolstered by the recovery of the injured Kyle Mills, who will take the new ball and also provide depth to the batting line-up. However, their coach Andy Moles still called India the favourites whom New Zealand would "respect but not be scared" of. They have no reason to be scared, after running Australia extremely close in the drawn Chappell-Hadlee Series earlier in the month.

And to say this is the only way he knows how to will be a discredit to Sehwag's cricketing acumen. What will disappoint him more, perhaps, is that India twice failed to capitalise on his quick starts. India will now want to look forward, to the one-day series where more McCullum-like endurance will be called for. The subtle adjustments needed in New Zealand conditions will become more important as the format of the game lengthens. "We are confident about each and every game," Mahendra Singh Dhoni said. "Even if we had won the last game, it wouldn't have made a difference. We have to keep repeating good work in every game of cricket."
Over the past week, Dhoni has given a good insight into how the Indian team has batted so far in New Zealand. He said the batsmen have been hitting almost everything off the middle of the bat in the nets, and almost everything in the matches. So it is a question of making technical and mental adjustments. Dhoni said he would leave it to the batsmen to assess a situation and bat accordingly.
